The US Department of Agriculture publishes eating and nutrition guidelines. The idea is that the general public would follow these guidelines to create a healthier America. Most nutrition guidelines do not provide for the special needs of seniors:

  • Some suggested elements can cause a negative reaction with medication.
  • These guidelines could aggravate conditions among seniors.
  • Some of the recommended foods may be tough for a senior with chewing or swallowing problems.
  • Seniors require more of certain vitamins and minerals to maintain a well-balanced diet.
