ProMedica Hospice Volunteers Contribute to Successful Camp Fearless

ProMedica Hospice agencies in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan recently hosted Camp Fearless, a bereavement camp for children and adolescents who have experienced the loss of a loved one. The bereavement camp features therapeutic activities, arts and crafts and team-building exercises led by a team of professional counselors, hospice team members and trained volunteers. Children explore issues related to the impact that loss can have on their lives in a safe and supportive atmosphere. ProMedica Hospice team members provide information and connect families with additional resources to help children continue to grow and move forward on their grief journey.

Hospice volunteers take on many different roles, from supporting hospice patients, families and the hospice care team, to volunteering their time at events to help the community. For Camp Fearless, the volunteers receive standard training along with grief training for children. ProMedica Hospice Serving Monroe and Lenawee Counties had 17 volunteers which included social workers from local schools, community service agencies, bereavement specialists from local funeral homes, volunTEENS and the current hospice volunteers at the agency. The Monroe agency has also been fortunate to partner with Gabby’s Grief Center for the past several years.

Volunteers help our campers with crafts and activities to encourage memory share of their loved one. Camp also includes fun group activities such as relay races, water fun and more which kept our volunteers on their toes, while reminding our campers that it is ok to have fun. The volunteers work with the campers through each process, sharing laughs and some tears. Camp Fearless is successful because of the support from our volunteers!
