Heartland Hospice Holds Special Veteran Ceremony

Heartland is committed to honoring veterans and often organizes events to recognize their service. Heartland Hospice Serving North Central Illinois and Southern Wisconsin recently held an event to recognize their Administrator’s father-in-law, Warren, a WWII fighter pilot receiving hospice services. Tammy, Account Liaison, who organized the event along with Carrie, Volunteer Coordinator, described the celebration.

“Warren, a veteran, had seemed sad when he heard about other veterans being honored for their service. He mentioned, ‘Those kinds of things never happen to me.’ We wanted to make sure Warren was honored during a celebration that would be unforgettable. We contacted the retirement community to collaborate on the details and invited Warren’s entire community along with family, friends and Heartland team members. We also arranged for the VietNow Color Guard to present Warren with his Heartland Hospice Veteran pin and certificate. It was a beautiful celebration! Seeing Warren stand and salute during the National Anthem was priceless. He was so proud and smiled so big when the Color Guard honored him."
“We proceeded to honor and thank all other veterans in the room by presenting them with a small patriotic star pin and card. To our surprise, we had over a dozen veterans in attendance. They stood tall as they were honored by the Color Guard. One veteran started to cry and said, ‘It is our honor to be here; you don’t know how much this means to all of us.’ We honored each member of the Color Guard with a star pin and thanked them for making Warren’s celebration unforgettable.”

Pam, Warren’s daughter-in-law, expressed her appreciation.

“As an administrator, I know how important it is to recognize our veterans. However, when your own family member is recognized by my Heartland team, it means so much more. What an honor to be a part of all of this. It meant the world to Dad!”
